Through a unique partnership with  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lowe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lowell National Historical Park <\/a>(LNHP),\u00a0state folklorist Maggie Holtzberg has been temporarily assigned to the Park to support the development and expansion of traditional arts programming serving the public.\u00a0We will continue our\u00a0work in running\u00a0a vital state\u00a0folk arts program &#8212;\u00a0doing field research, maintaining an archive, database, and website, and providing grants to individual artists. This new endeavor is an exciting opportunity to explore cross-cultural understanding within in the context of a National Park based on ethnic heritage, occupational folklore, immigration, and industrial history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1178\" title=\"Maggie at Park Headquarters. Photo by Sue Andrews\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/maggiepark3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The goal is to engage visitors and more of the region&#8217;s immigrant and ethnic populations by offering a robust variety of culturally-relevant public programs at the Park year-round. Though the MCC Folk Arts and Heritage Program has\u00a0worked with the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowellfolkfestival.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Lowell Folk Festival <\/a>for over a decade\u00a0(providing\u00a0potential\u00a0crafts artists and musicians,\u00a0emceeing on stages, etc.)\u00a0we will be more actively involved in the planning and presentation of folk\u00a0arts than ever before. This summer, look for\u00a0&#8220;Folk Craft\u00a0and Foodways&#8221; in Lucy Larcom Park where we will showcase some of the\u00a0extra-musical aspects of traditional folk culture.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is to\u00a0build on the energy of the\u00a0festival &#8212; the\u00a0high-quality, traditional\u00a0arts performances that are the hallmark of the Lowell Folk Festival &#8212; and\u00a0offer\u00a0similar experiences\u00a0throughout the year.\u00a0Special exhibits and interactive presentations of craft, foodways, performing, and expressive traditions will be developed based on both previous and new folklife field research within the region&#8217;s many diverse communities.
