Coming with little in the way of material wealth, many\u00a0settled into a community\u00a0known locally as\u00a0&#8220;The Acre&#8221; &#8212; an area that has served as a gateway neighborhood for generations of immigrants\u00a0coming to Lowell in search of a better life &#8212; Irish, Greeks, Poles, Scots, Portuguese, French Canadians, Italians, and Puerto Ricans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0section of Lowell got its name back in the 1840s\u00a0when\u00a0mill owners, who\u00a0were concerned about\u00a0having immigrant Irish workers living in their midst,\u00a0donated an acre of land southwest of the city&#8217;s center. Today&#8217;s\u00a0Acre is larger than its name implies and is\u00a0home to many Camobodians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, we hosted a\u00a0group of Cambodian &#8220;elders&#8221; from the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coalitionforabetteracre.org\/main.php\" target=\"_blank\">Coalition for a Better Acre\u00a0<\/a> at  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lowe\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lowell National Historical Park<\/a>. Chief of Cultural Resources David Blackburn pointed out the Acre and\u00a0several Park and downtown destinations on an orientation\u00a0map in the Visitor Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1424\" title=\"Map inside the Visitor Center\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/cbatour4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some members of the group had immigrated to Lowell in 1985, others more recently. Only\u00a0two\u00a0had visited\u00a0Lowell National Historical Park, and no one had ridden the trolley. They were excited!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1421\" title=\"Boarding the trolley at Mack Plaza\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/cbatour5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ranger Joanne Marcos shared Lowell&#8217;s history through stories\u00a0of mill girls, labor conflicts,\u00a0and new immigrants settling into ethnic enclaves &#8212; all of which\u00a0were translated into Khmer by Rasy An, staff member\u00a0at Coalition for a\u00a0Better Acre,\u00a0and Duey Kol, Assistant Director of Cultural Programming at the Park.<\/p>\n<p>The group of visitors was especially animated when entering the Boott Cotton Mill Museum.\u00a0Standing around a water-powered loom, one man recalled his mother weaving by hand in Cambodia. They marveled at how hard the mill girls worked, the heat and humidity, the long hours, the deafening roar and clack of machinery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1422\" title=\"Observing a Draper loom\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/cbatour6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1423\" title=\"Describing the shuttle and thread\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/cbatour7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our last stop was a visit to the Boarding House exhibit where they saw what the mill girls ate for breakfast, the tight sleeping quarters, and\u00a0the\u00a0clothing they wore. On the way out, we stopped briefly into the\u00a0immigration exhibit &#8212; where the last panel of a timeline focused on some of Lowell&#8217;s more recent immigrants.\u00a0There on the wall was a black and white photo from 1985 of a Cambodian family taken at the TWA terminal in Boston. One women in the group pointed to a man in the photo, who turned out to be her brother-in-law.\u00a0 What a welcome surprise for them to see their story on the wall, for all to see.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first of what we hope will be many interactions with the Cambodian community through our new partnership with the Coalition for a Better Acre.\u00a0Through this visit with us, it was apparent that, despite the language barriers,\u00a0they came away understanding\u00a0Lowell&#8217;s importance in America&#8217;s industrialization and how they fit into\u00a0the city&#8217;s story.
