They&#8217;d go from house to house, all by foot too.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Mary Dudek, Holy Trinity Polish\u00a0Church\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1774\" title=\"Basket with food to be blessed\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_basket2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">Our good friend and colleague Pauline Golec\u00a0is a native Lowellian who, for many years, has done much of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into\u00a0producing the city&#8217;s\u00a0festivals. If you&#8217;ve come to the Lowell Folk Festival and enjoyed the enticing array of ethnic food for sale by community groups, you have Pauline to thank.<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">Pauline\u00a0is also a long-time\u00a0member of Holy Trinity Parish, the designated mother parish for the Polish Community in the Merrimack Valley. So it made sense that we pay attention when she alerted us to a local Polish tradition at Holy Trinity. Having\u00a0cleared things with the monsignor, Pauline invites us to the &#8220;blessing of the food,&#8221; which is done on Holy Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 am.<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1757\" title=\"parishioners conversing\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_conversing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">We arrive shortly before nine and see a gathering of parishioners. Though we spot a few children, most are\u00a0older individuals.\u00a0Some have grown up in Lowell&#8217;s Polish neighborhood; others are more recent immigrants from Poland and Russia. All have brought baskets of Easter food to be blessed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1752\" title=\"Basket of butter lambs and bread\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_basket.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">It doesn&#8217;t take\u00a0long to see the similarity of\u00a0food items filling each basket &#8212; eggs, ham, kielbasa,\u00a0horse radish, pickles, mazurek, (traditional\u00a0Polish Easter cake), babka, (a sweet yeast bread), and butter lambs (wee lambs\u00a0made of molded butter.) When asked, individuals talk about\u00a0how each of these foods\u00a0represents\u00a0the meaning of Easter. The butter lambs represent Jesus,\u00a0the lamb of God;\u00a0the eggs symbolize life and Christ&#8217;s resurrection;\u00a0salt his\u00a0purification; horse radish, his\u00a0bitter sacrifice;\u00a0ham and kielbasa the joy and abundance of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">I&#8217;d been hearing about butter lambs associated with Easter for years, but had never seen one. Suddenly, here they are.\u00a0Pauline points to some made by Dottie Naruszewicz Flanagan,\u00a0&#8220;You see Dottie&#8217;s? She&#8217;s got a flock.&#8221; Indeed, these are some of the most impressive butter lambs in the room.\u00a0She has made 20 to give to neighbors and friends, which she presents on a paper plate with colored eggs. When I comment on the attention to detail,\u00a0Dottie explains, &#8220;I mold and my daughter swirls. And as she&#8217;s swirling (using a toothpick to simulate the lamb&#8217;s wool,) my grandson and I are doing the eggs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1744\" title=\"Dottie Naruszewicz Flanagan's butter lambs\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_butterlambs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1758\" title=\"Dottie Naruszewicz Flanagan's spread\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_dottie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">After admiring Dottie&#8217;s array of food, we meet Frank Markarewicz\u00a0who has brought\u00a0his food\u00a0to be blessed. Rather than nestled into an Easter basket, his food is\u00a0unceremoniously concealed in a brown paper grocery bag.\u00a0 We all laugh as Pauline\u00a0teases,\u00a0&#8220;From the sublime to the ridiculous! Straight from Market Basket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1759\" title=\"Food brought in brown paper grocery bag\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_brownbag.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">We are introduced to Jane Markiewicz Duffley, whose butter lambs are much larger than Dottie&#8217;s. To make her butter lambs, she uses candy molds\u00a0inherited from\u00a0her father, who once\u00a0owned\u00a0Blue Dot Candy on Bridge Street. She kept the molds he used in making chocolate bunnies. &#8220;I use them for Easter to make the lambs out of butter. It&#8217;s a nice tradition. We&#8217;ve been doing this since we were little kids. The priest used to come to the house to bless the food.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1749\" title=\"June with her candymold butter lambs\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/june_candymolds1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"[object]\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1743\" title=\"Regina Fuller and grandaughter Gabrielle\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_gabrielle2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">There was a time when the Polish Catholic priest would visit each house to bless the food in Lowell&#8217;s Polish neighborhood. Not unlike the family physician making\u00a0house calls, this is a thing of the past. Instead, the people come to the priest.<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">&#8220;Peace,&#8221; says Monsignor Stanislaw Kempa. Someone claps hands loudly to get\u00a0everyone&#8217;s attention. Monsignor Kempa\u00a0delivers the\u00a0 special prayers for\u00a0blessing the food, first in\u00a0English, and then in Polish. When\u00a0he announces, &#8220;Happy Easter. Hallelujah,&#8221; and procedes to sprinkle holy water while walking in amongst the assembled whose baskets of food line long tables throughout the hall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1768\" title=\"Monsignor Kempa delivering blessing\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_monsignorkempa_speaking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1747\" title=\"Monsignor Kempa sprinkling Holy water\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blessingfood_monsignorkempa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"[object]\">There is more visiting, exchanging of news, and cups of coffee.
