Irish fiddler  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massfolkarts.org\/object_detail.asp?ObjectID=8170118\">Laurel Martin <\/a>was awarded an apprenticeship in September 2010 to work with home-schooled teen, Natayla Kay Trudeau. Beyond the learning of new tunes, special\u00a0emphasis was put on\u00a0gaining an understanding of the older regional fiddle\u00a0styles\u00a0associated with\u00a0County Clare &#8212; a style Martin herself was\u00a0taught by\u00a0acclaimed Clare-born fiddler  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamusconnolly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Seamus Connolly<\/a>, in an apprenticeship more than 20 years ago.\u00a0Trudeau also learned about\u00a0fiddlers who were also known for their compositions, including tunesmiths Junior Crehan, Paddy O&#8217;Brien, Sean Ryan, and Ed Reavey.<\/p>\n<p>By June 2011, Trudeau&#8217;s\u00a0progress was audible; not only had she gained\u00a0respect for the authenticity of regional\u00a0fiddle styles, but her\u00a0technique,\u00a0musicality, and presence on stage\u00a0were surprising for one so young.\u00a0The two took part in a\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lowe\/parknews\/lowell-folklife-series-continues-traditional-irish-music-and-dance.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lowell Folklife Series concert <\/a>back in June at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre. Their music enlivened the stepdancing of\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/kieranjordan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kieran Jordan <\/a>and Kevin Doyle, along with their respective apprentices, Emerald Rae and Nicole Leblanc.<\/p>\n<p>And though the formal MCC-funded\u00a0apprenticeship with Laurel ended in June, Trudeau&#8217;s\u00a0education as a budding musician\u00a0has just begun. She will perform on December 12 at the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westford.com\/museum\/happenings_music.html\" target=\"_blank\">Westford Museum\u00a0<\/a> and will join Martin on stage at  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clubpassim.org%20\" target=\"_blank\">Club Passim <\/a>(also on December 12) and the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejavaroom.com%20\" target=\"_blank\">Java Room Coffee House<\/a> in Chelmsford (February 11).
