Many of Massachusetts’\u00a0de-industrialized mill and manufacturing\u00a0towns\u00a0are\u00a0known as “gateway cities.”<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Home to close-knit\u00a0communities of immigrants who initially came seeking work in the state’s once thriving mill and manufacturing sectors,\u00a0gateway cities\u00a0have been hit hard by\u00a0job loss and\u00a0poverty.\u00a0Average household incomes\u00a0remain below the state average as do\u00a0educational attainment rates.<\/p>\n

Gateway cities are often\u00a0the starting place for\u00a0new immigrants, who are drawn\u00a0by the\u00a0affordable housing and\u00a0competitive business opportunities.\u00a0In cities like Lawrence, Lowell, Springfield, and Brockton, and Fall River, it is not uncommon for\u00a0aging\u00a0Irish, French-Canadian, Greek, and Polish populations to live alongside\u00a0a new generation of\u00a0newcomers, emigrating\u00a0from places like\u00a0Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cambodia, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n

When it comes to the practice of faith, this\u00a0globalization means that once mono-cultural parishes are now multi-cultural, with multi-lingual masses.\u00a0The\u00a02009 documentary film Scenes from a Parish<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>is a window into this world.<\/p>\n
