One represents\u00a0an age-old\u00a0Yankee craft; the other,\u00a0an ancient\u00a0West African musical tradition. \u00a0Yet wooden boat builder  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massfolkarts.org\/object_detail.asp?ObjectID=8010074\" target=\"_blank\">Harold A. Burnham <\/a>and\u00a0Malian balaphon player  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massfolkarts.org\/object_detail.asp?ObjectID=8250166\" target=\"_blank\">Balla Kouyat\u00e9 <\/a>share something in common.\u00a0Each individual is carrying on a traditional art form passed on through his own family lineage.\u00a0Harold A. Burnham&#8217;s boat building ancestors arrived in Essex, Massachusetts nearly\u00a0400 years ago. Balla Kouyat\u00e9, who came to the United States just a decade ago,\u00a0was born into a musical family whose artistic lineage dates back 800 years. And their\u00a0traditions are stronger for it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1014\" title=\"Balla Kouyate playing the balaphon. Photo by Alison Williams\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/kouyate_support3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1033 aligncenter\" title=\"Bourds on underside of balaphon\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/kouyate_balaphon_gourds1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to performing in concert halls and clubs, Balla is ever present playing at weddings, baptisms, and other domestic ceremonies within the West African immigrant communities of Boston, New York City, and beyond. As for Harold Burnham, he has essentially revived a once dormant shipbuilding technique, and in doing so, has reconnected a town to its own shipbuilding heritage.
