Tunnelworkers, crane operators, pile drivers, ironworkers, carpenters, and electricians labored to replace an ugly and dangerous elevated highway and replace it with a 10-lane underground expressway.\u00a0Now that the\u00a0tunnels are tiled and the traffic is flowing,\u00a0we thought it was a good idea to remember\u00a0these laborers&#8217;\u00a0contribution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-992\" title=\"Glory Hole 28 on Big Dig site. \" src=\"https:\/\/blog.massfolkarts.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/bigdig_glory.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"121\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Listen  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massfolkarts.org\/audio\/Occupational_Folklore.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> as we venture down the &#8220;Glory Hole &#8220;and speak with Sand Hogs Steve Shepardson and Dominic Mazzeo.\u00a0(This 10-minute radio segment originally aired on WUMB in 2001.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-990\" title=\"Dominic Mazzeo, union steward. Sally Addison joined the Piledrivers Union in 1993 and worked on the Big Dig until it was completed in 2006.\u00a0When asked how her grandchildren\u00a0would be able to\u00a0appreciate\u00a0her role in the Big Dig,\u00a0Sally\u00a0said, &#8220;You can see what I&#8217;ve done.&#8221; We <em>can<\/em> see what she, and thousands of other Big Dig tradespeople, have\u00a0done.
